All NSW got for Christmas was a lump of coal

December 18th, 2009 · No Comments

Climate activists met NSW MPs arriving at State Parliament for a caucus meeting with christmas cheer and lumps of coal on Wednesday 17 December.

The coal signified the government’s addiction to coal, the number one cause of global warming.

Recently the NSW government signed an aggreement to build another coal loader at Newcastle to double the amount of coal exported from NSW.  Already coal ships are anchored up and down the NSW coast.

New coal mines are being approved and there are plans to build two new coal-fired power stations at Lithgow and the Upper Hunter Valley.

To continue to expand the coal industry when we know how urgently we need to act to avoid catastrophic climate change is utterly negligent.  The NSW government needs to commit to a moratorium on new coal-fired power stations and plan a transition away from dirty coal to clean energy technologies such as wind, solar and geothermal.
